No matter where you are in your podcasting journey—yet-to-launch all the way to multi-year veteran—I have a message for you.

This isn't going to be your typical SPI episode. You're not going to hear the usual intro and outro music; I'll drop in a few extra tracks here and there and try to pattern-interrupt a little bit. It's going to be a fun ride!

Podcasts are the most incredible thing, and if you've listened to this show before you've heard me talk about how life-changing they can be. You can do whatever you want; it's your show. And no matter where you are on that journey, you should be proud of the fact that you created something. It's an awesome feeling.

The purpose of today's episode is pretty simple: to inspire you. I'm going to break down some of the whys and hows, the unique struggles and challenges at each stage of the journey, plus a bunch of resources to get you where you're trying to go. Let's dive in!

Let me know what you think! Hit me up @PatFlynn on Twitter or on Instagram.

And hey, this week is sort of podcaster's week on SPI, so I have a bunch of videos that I just released that go deeper into mindset and strategies. Now, if you're brand-new to this, SmartPassiveIncome.com/podcastcheatsheet is your best best. But if you've already got a show up and running and you're looking to grow, SmartPassiveIncome.com/podcaster will link you to those videos.

After all of the build-up and anticipation, we’ve finally reached four hundred episodes. To celebrate, I’ve decided to look back and reflect on the top ten lessons I’ve learned since I started the Smart Passive Income Podcast in July 2010. When I started back then, I’m not sure I really anticipated getting to this point, and this episode was a great opportunity to look back and reflect on everything that helped me get where I am today.

Behind SPI, there is a great team helping me every step of the way. I think back to when I attended and spoke at Michael Hyatt’s conference, Platform, back in 2013. It was a great conference with a ton of amazing speakers. I’m not talking about myself here, but as people like Cliff Ravenscraft, Jeff Goins, Carrie Wilkerson, and little old me took the stage, I couldn’t help but notice that Michael was sitting in the audience and learning from us the entire time. Why? Because he had an amazing team behind him and he knew that the entire event would go off without a hitch. It was a real object lesson in how to delegate effectively, and today I can’t even imagine where I’d be without Team SPI here to support me every step of the way.

Another really big thing I’ve been thinking about recently is how we think about making mistakes. In the world of online entrepreneurship, you come across so many success stories. People who played their cards right and were able to hit the ground running flawlessly. What you don’t hear about are the mistakes, but I think the missteps are just as important as the times you got it right. Sometimes, you need to get it wrong so you know how to get it right.

Mistakes are only failures if we don’t learn anything from them. So wherever you are on your journey, whether you’re starting out and are unsure of what the right next steps are or if you’re in the “messy middle,” trying to figure out how to fit your business into the life you want to live, this episode’s for you. I couldn’t make four hundred episodes of SPI without you there along with me, every step of the way. Team Flynn, thanks for the amazing support and encouragement you’ve given me over the course of this wild ride. I’m so happy you’ve been there along with me, and here’s to Episode 500.

If you’re not already podcasting, I have just one question for you: WHY?! As I’ve been saying over and over on the Smart Passive Income Podcast, podcasting is just the most rapidly growing way to connect directly with your listeners. In the US right now, over half the population is listening to podcasts, and the crazy part is that number only figures to grow as more and more businesses and celebrities get involved in the game.

Now you might be thinking, “Pat, if all of these big names with built-in audiences are starting new podcasts, how can I hope to compete?” The thing you need to realize is that you only stand to benefit from the new listeners and new audiences these people bring in. They start listening to one podcast and suddenly they’re hooked, they’re listening while they go shopping, while they go to the gym, on their morning and evening commute, and guess what? They need more content. Most podcast listeners are subscribed to five to ten shows, and with the right strategy, you can get in that rotation.

There are a few tricks, however, that can help you hook your listeners right at the top and get to that magic moment where they decide they want to listen to you while they’re on that run or making that errand. That magic moment where they lock their phone and put it in their pocket and you have their complete attention for the next fifteen, twenty, even thirty minutes (for comparison, if you can keep a viewer for even five minutes on YouTube you’re doing very, very well). That’s what we talk about in today’s episode. And again, if you don’t already have a podcast, why do you need to start making one today. To help you get started, I’ve put together a Podcast Cheat Sheet that has everything you need to get your idea off the ground. Take a listen and start making something!

Erika Vieira started a little podcast—just kind of on the side, on top of her nine to five—because she was very curious about the world of YouTube, specifically, the world of successful female YouTubers. She started interviewing them, and lo and behold, she now has a six-figure business and a collection of all these amazing relationships with these YouTubers who are helping her grow her audience and her authority. We talk about her the podcast interviewer authority strategy that has led to her success.

Erika's journey is a brilliant case study throughout the world of podcasting. We're going to take you through the whole thing so that you know exactly how this was done.

Because she has all these connections to amazing YouTubers and she's a very knowledgeable person in that space, I just asked, “Hey, what's working on YouTube today?” And because I have been doing a lot of things on YouTube recently, her answer is exactly what I needed to hear, and I know that you're going to enjoy hearing that as well. It's the best advice I've heard so far about YouTube.

Imagine this: You're starting a business completely from scratch. You have zero audience, zero connections, zero followers, zero email list. You're literally starting from nothing. So, to build your audience, you start a podcast—recorded in your car—and you end up choosing a niche that is completely perfect because there is nothing like it where you are.

Well, this is exactly what Sophie Walker did. She started from scratch, and now today her podcast and her two audio series, Postpartum Life After Birth and Discovering Motherhood, are formally accredited by the Australian College of Midwives and can be counted as Certified Professional Development! To date, her podcast has had over 2.3 million downloads!

At one point, her podcast, Australian Birth Stories, was the number-one kids and family podcast in all of Australia. Just incredible success happening, because she put herself out there. She found a niche where other people wanted to listen, and success followed.

I'm so proud to also call Sophie one of my students from Power-Up Podcasting. Yes, this is that Sophie. And this is a fun podcast. Check it out.

Podcasting is obviously a really important part of my business, and the exciting thing is that there’s a LOT of potential for growth. If you look at the numbers, there are less than a million active podcasts out there. Compare that to YouTube and blogs, those numbers are about five hundred million each. It’s why I’m so dedicated to helping you get your own podcast out there with my Amp’d Up Podcasting and Power Up Podcasting courses, and why I wanted to sit down with my friend and co-conspirator Matt Gartland, COO and CFO of Flynndustries LLC. We talk about the state of podcasting in 2019: what we’re thinking about, what tools we’re excited about, and where there’s room for innovation.

The biggest news that we talk about is Spotify’s recent acquisition of two key podcasting businesses: Gimlet Media and Anchor.fm. With Gimlet, they have a powerhouse production team that puts out great shows like Startup and Reply All. With Anchor.fm, they have a publishing platform that makes it easier for people to get from having an idea to actually publishing a podcast. For Matt, it means that they’re establishing the kind of end-to-end ownership they need to create a walled garden of content. That gives them all sorts of options for innovation with the way they do ads, pay models, and more.

From there, we talk a lot about the innovations we’re dying to see in the podcast space, like recommended content and more analytics for creators. Matt and I have actually been doing some work in this space, so if you haven’t checked out the WordPress plugin we created for podcasting, be sure to visit SmartPodcastPlayer.com. We also go through the tools we use to fill in the gaps. There’s a lot of information packed into this episode, but the bottom line is that there has never been a better time to start podcasting, so get out there!
