#1: In 2022, my wife, Amy, and I decided to chase our dreams and create the life we wanted in a small town, trading in 24 years of big-city living. When we discovered the town that would become our new home, I was struck by the incredible community spirit, particularly the small businesses and community organizations that were integral to the community fabric. I wanted to know more about how these talented folks made it work with a smaller population and fewer resources, so I created this podcast.

#2: Making massive transformations in life is not easy, or everyone would be doing it. Change is hard. The mind resists change. So, to help your mind become an ally, you need to dig deep to discover what you most want and why.I believe that crazy, scary, soul-filling goals are how we find that extra gear to face the challenges that go along with chasing our dreams. But the right tools can help keep you focused when the inevitable second-guessing starts creeping in and even screaming at you.For show notes, visit the website for this episode. https://bartonquigley.com/smalltown/ep-2/

What caught my eye was (a) he is selling fresh seafood so far from the coast in a mountain town where his business is a unicorn, and (b) it took the support of the community to make it a sustainable success, turning it from a fluke into a fixture. We talk about unhelpful guidance counselors, homesteading, the genius of Joel Salatin and Polyface Farm, Oliver's connection with the National Geographic show Wicked Tuna, and the power of learning a trade and practical skills.Enjoy the show!Marsh Roots Seafood websiteMarsh Roots on InstagramMarsh Roots on Facebook----- 👇❤️If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.Additional links can be found in the Show Notes for this episode.

#9: Ken Arpino is the Executive Director of Wolfbane Productions, an incredibly talented, wickedly entertaining theatre company located in the tiny town of Appomattox, VA. Wolfbane brings big-time Broadway-quality programs to the small stage, and they do so in their own unique, quirky way. What began as a school project in the summer of 2008 by Ken’s husband, Dustin Williams (the founding Artistic Director), has grown from seasonal theatre in the woods (not kidding) to year-round productions in Appomattox and Lynchburg, VA, and they continue to grow and evolve.I was already a big fan the moment I discovered this group from afar, and I became a SUPER fan when I saw my first performance. Sitting down to chat with Ken about his theatrical journey and the story of Wolfbane Productions was an incredible treat, and I hope you enjoy it, too!Wolfbane Productions WebsiteWolfbane on InstagramWolfbane on FacebookKen Arpino on InstagramDustin Williams on InstagramAdditional links can be found in the Show Notes for this episode.

#10 Many locals I've spoken with credit Ashely Kershner as instrumental in turning around downtown Lynchburg, VA, since her arrival in 2016 as the Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) Executive Director. This non-profit group has been working "as the champion for downtown revitalization for 25 years," and with Ashley's vision, tenacity, endless drive, and commitment to community, the rubber has really been hitting the road, and the future is bright.Ashley is deeply passionate about Lynchburg as a whole and sees the downtown as a vehicle to improve the quality of life for everyone here. Beyond creating and hosting amazing community events such as Bright Nights Festival, Movies in the Park, Fireworks on the Riverfront, and many more, Ashley knows how important a beautiful, vibrant downtown is to the large local employers that compete with big cities for young talent. As a new local in Lynchburg, I am excited to see what’s next for the downtown area, especially after my conversation with Ashley. Hearing the story of her early days as Executive Director and her exciting vision for the future, I am so glad my wife and I moved here. There’s so much potential that it’s ridiculous, and more and more sharp, driven folks are starting to take advantage.Downtown Lynchburg Association WebsiteDowntown Lynchburg Association on InstagramDowntown Lynchburg Association on FacebookAdditional notes can be found in the Show Notes for this episode.

#16 Geoff Kershner is my guest today and yet another visionary. As the Executive Director of Lynchburg's Academy Center of the Arts and host of the Small Town Big Arts podcast, Geoff sees the power of the arts as a way to connect and strengthen the community. The key is to create an inclusive and diverse space for everyone, including those who are marginalized. With this intention, the arts can be a vehicle for expanding the collective conversation by exposing the community to uniquely authentic, creative expressions of humanity. As someone who believes it's going to take all of us to rise above this polarized moment in history, I got so much out of my conversation with Geoff.
#20 Daryl Calfee is the owner of Penny Lane Properties, a local design, development, and construction group in Lynchburg, VA. Several of my past and future guests highly recommended him for the show."Unstoppable," "Visionary," "Highly Creative," "Out of the Box Thinker," "Always Thinks About Maximizing His Time & Talents for the Community," and "Desire to Serve & Elevate Marginalized Neighbors."Just ten minutes into our conversation, I could not agree more with these statements.Daryl is a machine with a massive heart for the people and the broader community in Lynchburg, VA. He truly is a visionary who uses real estate development to create opportunities for small businesses and community leaders to launch and flourish, particularly for those who don't have access to vast amounts of financial and relationship capital.Although Daryl has enjoyed great success in his career and in his businesses, he is incredibly humble and gracious, always giving credit to his collaborators. He also never stops to rest on his achievements but constantly keeps his eyes on the horizon. His energy, excitement, and enthusiasm for what's possible in Lynchburg are infectious, and I am glad to be living here while this man is on fire! 🔥Don't everyone move here at once... 🤐Grab a cup of coffee (or four) and enjoy the show!Penny Lane Properties WebsitePenny Lane Properties on InstagramDaryl Calfee's WebsiteDaryl Calfee on Instagram---------If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.Additional links can be found in the Show Notes for this episode. Thanks for listening!
#24 On today's show, I am going to tell the We Story, one year later, about what happened over the last 12 months since my wife Amy and I decided to burn the boats and trade San Francisco, our home for 24 years, for a small town in Central Virginia with no established network or jobs lined up. Are we crazy? Sort of, but in the most fun kind of way! 🥳Our journey is still unfolding in Lynchburg, VA. However, on our first anniversary of moving here, we stopped to reflect on all we had done and how much our lives had changed. It was something to behold. When you are in the weeds of a massive undertaking, it can be easy to focus on how far you have to go. But when you pause and recognize how far you've come, it can change your entire outlook.Enjoy the show!---------------If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility. Thanks for listening! And when I decided to create a podcast all about individuals making a meaningful impact in their small towns, THIS interview was high on my list. Even from 3,000 miles away, with social media as my only lens, I could feel the passion, drive, and vision that this beautiful soul has for improving the futures of at-risk youth in a way that dramatically changes their lives forever. If people are our greatest resource, as I believe they are, then Sterling is making an investment when and where it counts, and I could not be a bigger fan.Enjoy the show!Jubilee Family Development Center's WebsiteJubilee on InstagramJubilee on Facebook---------------If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility. Thanks for listening!
#26 Tori Garris is the creator and star of the sweet, wholesome kids' show Torbee, a program that is all about slowing things down in a fast-paced world.Tori is a transplant, just like me. She and her husband relocated from Chicago to Lynchburg, VA, 5 years ago. Since then, she became inspired to revive her professional acting career and develop a program for children, which launched on YouTube in 2024.This may be a kids' show, but I see so many lessons adults can learn from Torbee, especially rekindling a sense of wonder that we grown-ups have long forgotten. And, as you will hear, Tori has big visions for using this platform, including addressing serious topics in a way that informs children by meeting them where they are. Smart...This show is self-described as Mr. Rogers meets Reading Rainbow meets Sesame Street, while staying engaging enough to stand out amongst the more frenetic children's programming of today. And by staying away from potentially polarizing themes, Torbee truly is a show for all children.I love Tori's heart, and I am excited to share this inspiring and entertaining story with you.Enjoy the show!Torbee's WebsiteTorbee on InstagramTorbee on FacebookTorbee on TikTokBluey, the Kid's Show About DogsAbstract: The Art of Design, Episode with Cas HolmanBook: Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr.---------------If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility. Thanks for listening! Or, as my tour guide Randy pointed out, at Vector Space, you can make almost anything! This 22,000 square foot shop is filled with every tool, machine, and gizmo a geek like me could ever dream of. Woodworking, blacksmithing, sewing, screen printing, pottery, and on and on and on...It...is...so...COOL!I invite you to enjoy this wide-ranging conversation, not only about Elise and Adam's backstory but also about the transformative power of making something with your hands, especially in today's disconnected digital world. We also discuss the importance of running a non-profit like a business and how to sustainably grow an organization by letting your customers and members help guide its path (in addition to creating something YOU love).Enjoy the show!Vector Space's WebsiteVector Space on InstagramVector Space on FacebookVector Space on YouTubeMake Magazine Founder Dale Dougherty on LinkedInDale Dougherty's Ted Talk "We Are Makers"Adam Savage Book "Every Tool's A Hammer"---------------If you believe that inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility. Thanks for listening!
My guest is Marc Schewel, whose family name is well-known in Lynchburg and other small to mid-markets across Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia, thanks to Schewel’s Home Furniture and its 50+ locations. This family business was founded in 1897, making it one of the oldest furniture retailers in the United States. It is currently owned and operated by Marc and his brother Jack, 4th generation Schewels, along with Marc’s son Matt, the 5th generation. The history of the Schewel family business has been well-documented locally, but that’s not why Marc was suggested as a guest for this show. Jill, a mutual friend and fan of the podcast, is well-connected in Lynchburg and felt that it was actually Marc’s story about his philanthropy and service to the community that was inspiring and worth highlighting. I could not agree more…And that’s why the bulk of this conversation focuses on the power of contributing to others with whatever means you can. Because you not only give, but you also receive, and in wonderful, unexpected ways.Enjoy the show!Schewels Home Funiture WebsiteSchewels Home Furniture on InstagramSchewels Home Furniture on FacebookBook Marc Mentions, "The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Who Left Newark for the Ivy League"---------------❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.😊 Thanks for listening! I couldn't wait to dive into Sam and Robb's story, especially as first-time business owners bringing something out of left field to a small town in central Virginia. But I was even more stoked to thoroughly connect with these two wonderful people. Sam and Robb are thoughtful, loving, and care a great deal about the overall wellness of the community.Their entrepreneurial journey may be young, but Sam and Robb are old souls who bring wisdom from deep within their hearts.
Myke Barron is the President of Black Stag Group, which operates White Hart Cafe in downtown Lynchburg, VA, alongside his business partner Vic Stanley, Jr.The White Hart is affectionately known as "Lynchburg's Living Room" and has become a cultural center for performing arts and music, especially on their famous Open Mic nights.I have frequented the White Hart so many times since moving to Lynchburg in 2023. And Myke has always been there, flashing his bright, loving smile and a genuine desire to connect. I could instantly sense his depth of caring for all those around him - customers, employees, and open mic performers and guests. The White Hart story has been on my list for this show for some time. But what began as an interest in the business soon became a deeper interest in Myke's story.

Myke Barron is the President of Black Stag Group, which operates White Hart Cafe in downtown Lynchburg, VA, alongside his business partner Vic Stanley, Jr.

The White Hart is affectionately known as "Lynchburg's Living Room" and has become a cultural center for performing arts and music, especially on their famous Open Mic nights.

I have frequented the White Hart so many times since moving to Lynchburg in 2023. And Myke has always been there, flashing his bright, loving smile and a genuine desire to connect. I could instantly sense his depth of caring for all those around him - customers, employees, and open mic performers and guests.

The White Hart story has been on my list for this show for some time.
#34 John Seinar is the current owner of Bikes Unlimited, Lynchburg, Virginia's oldest bicycle shop, which opened in 1967. John took over the current downtown location in January 2020 and recently opened Trailhead, a cozy, casual bar and restaurant right next door. What originally attracted me to this story was the bike shop's longevity, which is no small feat, especially in a small town. I also wanted to know the story behind Pints After Pedals, a super easy group ride that encourages the community to come together, enjoy the local trails, and share a frosty brew at the end. However, once I learned that John was also adding a restaurant to the mix, which is not for the faint of heart, I had a hunch that this man has the right kind of crazy and knowledge to be a successful entrepreneur here in Lynchburg. I had hoped to glean some insights and suggestions that could help other local small business owners thrive. I was not disappointed. One of the biggest keys to John's success is his curious, playful, generous spirit. John is also competitive, but he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is incredibly rare. This allows him to learn quickly from his mistakes and spot new opportunities. I had a great time geeking out with John, and I am excited to continue following his journey. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation about creating culture, raising the bar, serving others, and having a damn good time doing it all.Enjoy the show!Bikes Unlimited's WebsiteBikes Unlimited on InstagramBikes Unlimited on FacebookTrailhead's WebsiteTrailhead on InstagramTrailhead on Facebook

She is also the creator and owner of The Flour District, an artisan bakery, cafe and teaching kitchen, located right next door where my wife, Amy, is the COO.These two businesses are shining examples that, yes, you can elevate style and taste and thrive in a small town that's dominated by chain restaurants and stores. But to Amy and me, Stephanie is much more than a business owner. Her keen interest in potentially hiring Amy was one of the key reasons we took a leap of faith and moved from San Francisco to Lynchburg without jobs set up. Our intuition told us that we just needed to get here and that we would figure out the rest. Not only did Stephanie hire Amy, she also became the first client of my off-leash dog adventure business. She is now a dear friend, and her family feels like our family.I am excited to share Stephanie's journey from making and selling pasta out of her basement and at farmer's markets, to the gorgeous retail shop that's part of Bedford Avenue's incredible revitalization.Enjoy the show!Scratch Pasta's WebsiteScratch Pasta on InstagramScratch Pasta on FacebookThe Flour District's WebsiteThe Flour District on InstagramThe Flour District on Facebook---------------❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.😊 Thanks for listening! The fact that there are therapists who proudly serve the underserved seriously piqued my interest. And when I sat down to chat with Jessica to get to know more of her story, I was hooked. She is another example of a bright, loving, impactful soul who was drawn to Lynchburg and who is making a meaningful difference in the community. There's clearly something in the water here, and I am honored to swim alongside someone like Jessica. Please enjoy this wide-ranging and inspiring conversation about mental health, life's mysterious journey, work-life balance, and much more.Creekside Therapeutics' WebsiteCreekside Therapeutics on InstagramCreekside Therapeutics on FacebookCreekside Therapeutics on LinkedInCreekside Therapeutics on YouTube---------------❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.😊 Thanks for listening! This non-profit has been empowering young dreamers and seekers since 2011, preparing them for the big stage, both literally and figuratively.Beacon's mission is to "inspire Lynchburg's youth to pursue post-secondary education or training, invest in their potential, and equip them to become contributing individuals to the betterment of our community."Um... hi... I am so in love with this group and with Leidra. How could you not be?When I attended their annual event, HOPEx, recently, I was lit up! Think TED talks meets Moth Storytelling. For 2 hours, I was spellbound, listening to inspiring stories from adults and young adults alike. Amy and I truly floated out of there and could not stop talking about what a transformational event it was.And when I sat down to record my conversation with Leidra, all I could think of were the words "effortless" and "grace." Because when you are fully invested in a mission like Beacon's, you access stores of energy and power that are well beyond what you can possibly imagine. Please join me for this wonderful conversation and get to know Leidra, a true beacon of light and hope.Lynchburg Beacon of Hope's WebsiteLynchburg Beacon of Hope on InstagramLynchburg Beacon of Hope on FacebookLynchburg Beacon of Hope on LinkedInLynchburg Beacon of Hope on YouTube---------------❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.😊 Thanks for listening!
#39 Cari and Seth Reed are the wife and husband team behind Remington Ranch, a regenerative farm located 30 minutes outside of Lynchburg in Gladys, Virginia.Regenerative farming is a term that basically means working in harmony with Mother Nature instead of against her. The chickens, pigs, turkeys, and lambs are humanely raised without chemicals or GMOs. These animals also enjoy the grasslands and forests on Reed's gorgeous 45-acre property. The result is clean, healthy, super nutritious food that also creates rich, fertile soil. Talk about a win-win!Now, I've met hard, hard-working, humble people before in my life, but Cari and Seth take the cake. Not only are they running a busy, super successful farm on their own, which includes end-to-end processing of the animals and attending farmers' markets on weekends, but they also have full-time jobs in local law enforcement. It was an honor to sit down with these two and capture their story. There are so many inspiring nuggets on the beauty of hard work, living in concert with nature, and the mental and spiritual benefits of serving your community in a profoundly meaningful way.Enjoy the show!Remington Ranch WebsiteRemington Ranch on InstagramRemington Ranch on Facebook---------------❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.😊 Thanks for listening! Not only are they running a busy, super successful farm on their own, which includes end-to-end processing of the animals and attending farmers' markets on weekends, but they also have full-time jobs in local law enforcement.

It was an honor to sit down with these two and capture their story. There are so many inspiring nuggets on the beauty of hard work, living in concert with nature, and the mental and spiritual benefits of serving your community in a profoundly meaningful way.

Enjoy the show!

Remington Ranch Website
Remington Ranch on Instagram
Remington Ranch on Facebook

---------------

❤️ If you believe inspiring stories like this can empower others to create meaningful lives and impact the world, join the Small Town Secret Sauce Patreon Community and become an ambassador for possibility.

😊 Thanks for listening!
