It’s Victory Monday on Niners Talk, and John, Tim and Brian are celebrating San Francisco’s huge Week 1 win over the Rams in Melbourne.

After an offseason spent hearing about Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Myles Garrett, the return of Aaron Donald and a Rams roster seemingly destined for the Super Bowl, reality finally arrived. 

The 49ers showed up ready to play — and the Rams didn’t.

The guys break down what went right for San Francisco, what went wrong for Los Angeles, and whether the Rams made a massive mistake by arriving in Australia just 28 hours before kickoff. 

Did jet lag actually become a factor? Did the Rams believe too much of their own hype? And did the 49ers’ decision to arrive 10 days early give them an advantage that went far beyond simply adjusting their body clocks?

There’s also a bigger win off the field. While the Rams treated Melbourne like a business trip, the 49ers embraced Australia — and Australia appears to have embraced the Niners right back.

It’s only Week 1, and nobody is burying the Rams just yet. But after months of predictions, projections and talking heads telling us how this season was supposed to go, the games finally count.

And the San Francisco 49ers are 1-0.

Brock Purdy was nearly flawless, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards, throwing two touchdowns, running for another and finishing with a 149 passer rating.

Even more impressive? The 49ers have now gone two straight games without allowing a sack — something the franchise hadn’t accomplished to start a season since sacks became an official statistic. 

Christian McCaffrey reached 100 career touchdowns, George Kittle looked like vintage Kittle in his return, Mike Evans continues to give the offense a true difference-maker on the outside, and San Francisco scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions. The defense joined the party with four sacks while continuing to keep opponents out of the end zone when it matters.

But it wasn’t all perfect.
